Configuring Windows Services
Updated for Service pack 2.

is incorrect or not.

Notes

All of these services are standard with Windows XP after the installation of Service Pack 2. If there is a
service(s) listed on your computer that is not listed here, it is due to the fact a third party service(s)
was installed.
If you do not have some of these services listed, You may bought a computer from a manufacture which
they "pre-installed" a modified version of Windows XP, they may not to have certain unneeded
services installed for you. Or you may not have installed Service Pack 2.
Putting your setting to "manual" or the listing under "Safe." Manual allows Windows XP to start up
services when it needs to, but not at boot up. Depending on your configuration, not all services
will start when required while in "Manual" mode. If you find you need a service, place it in Automatic.
Disabling all of the "unneeded services" can free up about 10 to 80 MB of RAM,
An asterisk indicates changes from Service Pack 1a to Service Pack 2.
If certain services below are disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

Default Start-Up Setting Home/Pro ~ This is what is running on Windows XP by default.
Auto (Autotomatic) ~ With a service in this state, it will start at boot time. Some services,
when no longer required, will also automatically stop when not needed. If you find you
do not need a service, place it into Manual or Disabled.
Manual ~ Manual mode allows Windows to start a service when needed. However, very few
services will start up when required in Manual mode. If you find you need a service, place
it into Automatic.
Disabled ~ This setting will stop a service from starting, even if needed.
"SAFE" Configuration ~ This is the configuration that most people will be able to use with little or
no side effects. It will also minimizes the amount of "errors" that is reported in the Event Viewer.

Directions

Click start-->Run, then type services.msc to start "Services" control panel.
- Note: If you choose to use msconfig instead of services.msc, to make changes to your services changes,
  you can indivertibly disable services that may be required to boot your computer.
Double Click on the particular service you want to change.
Under the "General Tab" you'll see where it say start up type. Choose one of the following options. Automatic, Manuel, or Disabled.
Reboot your computer after adjusting your service settings.

o Note: Be sure to look at the "Dependencies" tab as well as this web page, you can see what that particular service your trying
to change depends on. (Meaning some services depend on other services to run. So if you disable a service that depends on
another service, it will disable that service or cause it not to run properly.)

Automatic Updates (svchost.exe) E~nables the download and installation of critical Windows updates. If the service is disabled, the operating system can be manually updated at the Windows Update Web site, If you choose not to use this service, such as examples in the following: Slow dial-up connection. Takes to long for installing updates Want to learn more about the update before downloading. Find out why you need the update and what it fixes. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (svchost.exe) ~Uses idle network bandwidth to transfer asynchronous data. Windows Update & MSN Explorer uses this "feature." It "continues" a download if you log off / logon or shutdown / restart of the system. ClipBook (clipsrv.exe) ~Enables ClipBook Viewer to store information and share it with remote computers. If the service is stopped, ClipBook Viewer will not be able to share information with remote computers.~ Other words, its a version of clip board (that allows you to copy & paste) but made to be used for remote computer users. IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service (imapi.exe) ~Enables "drag and drop" CD burn capability. This service starts and stops itself when needed while in the manual state. Indexing Service (cisvc.exe) ~Indexes files on local and remote computers, for rapid access to files. It uses about 500 K to 2 MB of memory in an idle state, Also uses high amount of CPU resources. You can however remove this service, through "add/remove" programs in the control panel. Message Queuing Triggers (mqtgsvc.exe) ~Associates the arrival of incoming messages at a queue with functionality in a COM component or a stand-alone executable program.~ This service is required in conjunction with Message Queuing service. Messenger (services.exe) ~Provides the ability to send messages between clients & servers. It is also advisable to disable this service to avoid the possibility of "net send" messages getting sent to your computer from the internet with SPAM! If Service Pack 2 is installed, this service is set from Automatic to Disabled by default. This service has in NOT the same MSN Messenger. To test for vulnerability, open the command prompt program (start-menu-->run) type: net send 127.0.0.1 test If you receive a dialog box with the message "test", you should disable the Messenger service. If you receive an error stating, "The message alias could not be found on the network," you are safe. MS Software Shadow Copy ~Provider (dllhost.exe) Manages software-based volume shadow copies taken by the Volume Shadow Copy service. this service is used conjunction with the Volume Shadow Copy service, Microsoft Backup uses these services. Third party hard disk software ("ghost" or "imaging") may need this service to be running. NetMeeting Remote Desktop ~Sharing (mnmsrvc.exe) Enables you to access another computer or vise versa using NetMeeting. Network Location Awareness (NLA) (svchost.exe) ~Notifies network servers when certain information changes, such as network configuration and location information settings. Portable Media Serial Number or Portable Media Serial Number Service (svchost.exe) R~etrieves serial numbers from portable music players connected to your computer. Print Spooler (spoolsv.exe) ~Queues up print jobs in memory for "later" printing. This service is required if you have printers, even for network printers. You can place this service into manual, Then it should only start it up when printing is needed. Protected Storage (lsass.exe) ~Allows the ability to save local passwords. QoS RSVP (rsvp.exe) ~Provides local traffic control on a network using IPSEC and QoS-aware applications.
